Ten Tors is a challenge for 14-18 year olds from schools and youth organisations. Teams of six have to walk 35, 45 or 55 miles across Dartmoor, visiting ten tors on the way. Leaving at 7am on Saturday, they have to be completely self-sufficient, camp overnight on the moor and return to Okehampton Camp by 5pm on Sunday. Colyton Grammar School has a proud history of involvement in the event and entered four teams in 2016.
2016 Event Report
In an experiment, the 35 mile team contained some younger (Year 9) students for the first time and they stormed round, arriving back at Okehampton Camp at just after 11am on Sunday morning.
In a spectacular display of fitness and team spirit, the first of the two 45 mile teams arrived back eight minutes before the 35 milers, despite having done an additional 10 miles. They were only narrowly beaten, being one of the first teams on their route.
No doubt as a consequence of the good reputation Colyton has in the competition, we were allowed to have an additional 45 mile team, which enabled an additional six students to take part. They again exceeded expectations, arriving back with 2.5 hours to spare and fully justifying their selection.
IThe 55 mile team achieved the unbelievable feat of walking over 35 miles in one day, continuing to walk for 14 hours until it was nearly dark. They arrived back at the quite staggering time of 13:51, less than three hours after the 35s. Some of the team even had the energy to jump around at the end to celebrate!
Congratulations to them all on a stupendous result all round!
