Please note: as an unreformed subject General Studies will retain the AS/A2 structure. However, as part of our three year Sixth Form our students pursue AS level only.
All students will have the opportunity to add breadth to their studies through the completion of a course in General Studies. This programme contributes to the award of the AQA-BAC.
Overview of the AS modules completed in Year 11
Unit 1: Will consider the changing nature and importance of culture. This will include creativity, innovation and aesthetic evaluation. In addition, beliefs, values and moral reasoning will be explored together with ideologies and values in society. The final section looks at political processes and goals, the media and communication, and the relationship between law, society and ethics.
Unit 2: Involves the study of the characteristics of the sciences and seeks to develop an understanding of scientific methods, principles, criteria and their application. In addition, the nature of objectivity and the question of progress will be considered. The final sections of both modules will look at the social, ethical and environmental implications of scientific discoveries and technological developments, and the moral responsibility of scientists in society.
Assessment: The AS will be assessed by two examinations
